I depart briefly from my brief words protocol in this magnificent event, to remember that a little over eighty years the English criminal illustrious Don Luis Jiménez de Asua suffered arbitrary confinement in Chafarinas, and thanks to the solidarity of the guild of lawyers around the world was possible his freedom among those lawyers who were Cuban lawyers protested the likes of Fernando Ortiz, Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring.
Let me say that yesterday my colleagues and the team of Radio Marti and TV-radio right now transmitted live to Cuba this ceremony, we were at the Palace of Justice in Belgium, all agree in considering only that respects the law and justice can be taken seriously, could exist as majestic building for this important role.
Personally, upon entering the room felt the presence of the goddess Themis, banished from our little country for nearly half a century, and so are banished more than two million Cubans.
colleagues, be sure that they were not wrong in choosing Dr. Rene de Jesus Gomez Manzano as the winner of the most ancient and prestigious European award that lawyers provide to lawyers for their outstanding work on behalf of Human Rights.
From Hesiod to Gabriel García Márquez, our profession has been criticized by the literature. But I am convinced that Aristophanes Wasps would not have written if he had met Nelson Mandela, Peace Zúñiga, Digna Ochoa, Gómez Manzano and other awards by Ludovic Trarieux. All of them to date are an example for lawyers around the world.
I recognize in this ceremony where European lawyers pay tribute to another lawyer, the brave and heroic conduct Braffort Dean, who during the Nazi occupation of Belgium refused to surrender the German military command list of Jewish lawyers. Cuban lawyers never forget the distinguished Dean.
Distinguished colleagues, this award is not only Rene: it's all his colleagues who feel so and so, too, recognized Gómez Manzano himself, which was extended to all opponents in Cuba fighting for the respect of Human Rights. Pardon
at this moment to acknowledge my friends who accompany me: Dr. Luis F. Fernandez and former political prisoner for 17 years, Dr. Pedro Fuentes Cid, who abandoned their important duties and their own cost, are here on behalf of Cuban law, particularly on behalf of the Lawyers Committee for Freedom of Mr Rolando Jimenez impoundments.
would be unforgivable not to take this opportunity to be in the capital of the European Union, in the land of King Knight, to sue of lawyers on the continent, in a spirit of union, their solidarity with the unjust and arbitrary imprisonment have our colleague Rolando Jiménez Pozada, sentenced to twelve years imprisonment in a secret trial with no warranty and peculiarities are punishable four years of seeking the prosecution.
But from this sacred place in Belgium, a spirit of justice call upon all countries of the European Union to require the Cuban government to release hundreds of political prisoners are dying in Cuban dungeons.
